Certifying your repository against the 16 Data Seal of Approval requirements has, chief among them that the repository is recognized in the community as a trustworthy source of data.
Starting point for obtaining the Data Seal of Approval
Complete a self-assessment in the. The online tool takes you through the 16 and provides you with support.
Once you have completed your self-assessment you can submit it for peer review. The peer reviewer will go over your answers and documentation and will award the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) when you have met the requirements.
Your self-assessment and review will not become public until the Data Seal of Approval is awarded.
Receiving the Data Seal of Approval
After the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) is awarded by the Board, the DSA logo may be displayed on the repository’s Web site. The Board will provide appropriate HTML code, which includes the DSA logo and a link to the organization’s assessment.
The DSA Board then places the approved assessment of the new DSA repository on the DSA Web site, using the name of the specific repository and a logo if provided.

The 16 Data Seal of Approvalare based on the following five criteria:
- The data can be found on the Internet
- The data are accessible (clear rights and licences)
- The data are in a usable format
- The data are reliable
- The data are identified in a unique and persistent way so that they can be referred to
Renewing the Data Seal of Approval
Your Data Seal of Approval for a given period can be displayed indefinitely but will need to be updated periodically if the repository wants to stay compliant with newly released standards and receive the latest DSA logo. DSA-certified repositories will be contacted automatically when an update is available. The current Seal is the one issued according to the Core Trustworthy Data Repository Requirements and displaying the years 2017-2019.
